WRITTEN BY RHETT · MORE THAN FIVE YEARS SOBER

You can do this. Others have. You're not the exception.

I'm Rhett. Three DUIs, multiple rolled vehicles, and blackouts I'd stopped counting — that wasn't a crisis to me anymore, it was just my normal. More than five years sober now, leaner and stronger than I've ever been, and rebuilt almost everything I broke. This is the toolkit I wish I'd had on Day 1 — and the one I keep using today.

THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS ON DAY 1

Believe you can. Other people have done this. There is nothing about you that makes you the exception.

Sobriety. The body. The relationships. The money. The version of you that you keep promising yourself you'll meet someday. None of it is reserved for other people. The work is real, and the work works. I'm proof. So is everyone walking around quietly rebuilt.

WHO I AM, IN THIRTY SECONDS

I'm not a coach. I'm just further down the same road.

For about five years I was stuck in the cycle most people in early sobriety know — one or two steps forward, three or four steps back. Three DUIs, multiple rolled vehicles, and a blackout count I'd stopped keeping — by then, blacking out was just what a weekend looked like. Finally, that broke the spell. I went to inpatient about thirty days sober. A Zoom AA meeting a week or two earlier — during COVID, before I went in — was the first time I sat somewhere and thought I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.

That was more than five years ago. Since then I've gotten leaner than I was in high school, built a workout routine that actually works for me, repaired most of what I broke, and slowly figured out how to be a person on purpose. None of it was inevitable. All of it was learnable.

You are exactly where you're supposed to be, even if it doesn't feel like it yet. — The thing I wish someone had told me on Day 1
